The Wrigley Company is constructing a $63m plant in Kenya, which global president Martin Radvan calls an ‘important early step’ in realising a strategic commitment to Africa.

The new factory in Mavoko, Machakos County, will replace an existing plant in Nairobi’s Industrial Area, which has been operated by Wrigley since 1972. Wrigley says the factory will reduce the amount of water used and promote good energy consumption.

Built on a 20 acre site, the plant is also expected to create jobs when it starts production in the first quarter of 2017.

The company - a subsidiary of Mars, Incorporated - sells gum brands such as Big G, PK, Doublemint, Juicy Fruit, and Orbit in Kenya.

Martin Radvan, Wrigley global president, said the new factory would help create sustainable long-term growth in East Africa, as well as South Africa and the newly launched business in West Africa.

“More broadly, this investment is an important early step in realizing the strategic commitment of Mars, Incorporated to build a lasting business in Africa,” he added.
