Danisco's new juice kit targets healthy confectionery market

By Linda Rano , 11-Jun-2008

Danisco is promoting the health-benefits of its ingredients with a new juice confectionery demonstration kit.

The pack, called Set The Juices Loose, contains four confectionery prototypes containing fruit juices and Danisco health-benefiting ingredients, a company spokesman told ConfectioneryNews.com

"The health benefits of Danisco's ingredients, combined with the nutritional value of fruit juices, offer a huge potential for making innovative 'better-for-you' confectionery products," said the spokesperson.

Health foods

According to the company, the main advantage for confectioners is that the fruit juice candy complements consumers' preference for health-related foods. The health food market isn't just a trend but "the way forward, an integrated part of our lives," it added.

Confectionery containing exotic super fruit juices such as pomegranate and yumberry, together with familiar juices such as cranberry and raspberry "offer high levels of antioxidants and health-promoting properties,' claims the company.

The demonstration kit, containing four candies produced in-house, showcases three flavour systems - apricot and orange, raspberry and yumberry and pomegranate, raspberry and blueberry.

Also included in the pack are super-juice jellies and gummies which contain added fibre. "With LitesseUltra as part of the formulation, these candies are also reduced in sugar with a low glycaemic response to avoid a sugar rush", said the company.

Sugar-free

The super-juice chewy candies are reduced in sugar including "the antioxidants of fruit juice that can help reduce cholesterol." said the spokesman. "With the inclusion of LitesseUltra, these chews are also rich in fibre for improved digestive health."

Danisco's website claims that Litesse can be used in formulating low calorie, sugar free, reduced sugar, low fat foods and it can lower glycaemic response while adding fibre to all kinds of processed foods.

The company acknowledged that the ingredients in the four samples are not new, but said they should make a significant contribution to meeting health market demands. Since the ingredients are available already, supply is straight-forward, it added.
