The active, intelligent packaging industry will double in size from €15bn in 2015 to €32bn in 2022, according to AIPIA (Active & Intelligent Packaging industry Association).

More than 300 guests, including Nestlé, Heineken, PepsiCo and Unilever, attended the fifth annual congress in Amsterdam this week (November 14-15).

Dick de Koning, president, AIPIA, said the theme of the two-day event, ‘Active & Intelligent Packaging by Design’, reflects the fact manufacturers need to work with designers on future brand opportunities.

Embrace change

Eef de Ferrante, executive director, AIPIA, said he recently read an article by Indra Nooyi, CEO, PepsiCo, that if you don’t embrace change as a company, you might as well change your job.

The same is true with packaging manufacturers; they need to embrace digital technology to stay ahead of their competitors,” he said.

The design of packaging will have to integrate new technologies and we need to know what they are and how to implement them.

“To pack something is one thing, but to communicate directly with the consumer is another,” ended De Ferrante.
