Tootsie Roll Industries’ long-standing CEO and chairman of its Board of Directors Melvin J.Gordon has died aged 95.

His wife Ellen R. Gordon, director of the company and its president and chief operating officer has been appointed Tootsie Roll’s new CEO and chairman.

Melvin J. Gordon died on Tuesday following a brief illness. He joined Tootsie Roll’s Board in 1952 and was appointed chairman in 1962.

Mrs Gordon said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce today the passing of Melvin – we will all miss him greatly.

“Melvin’s life represented the very highest values in business, wisdom, generosity, and integrity. Tootsie Roll has seen great growth and success during his time as Chairman. Melvin’s dedication to Tootsie Roll for over fifty years as Board Chair, his creativity and determination were an inspiration to us all.”

In fiscal 2013 - Tootisie Roll's last full financial year, net earnings were up 17% to $60.8m compared to 2012.
