'Mindless munching' sees UK sweet sales soar

UK sales of bags, boxes and bars of sweets are rising by 5 per cent a year in volume terms, according to the latest available statistics.

Symphony IRI said that 2.9bn bags, boxes and bars of sweets had been sold in the UK over the past 12 months, with family-sized packs said to be behind the rise of around 120m units year.

Our sister publication, The Grocer, said that 'sharing bags' recently launched by many confectionery suppliers were much in vogue, while people were also indulging in "mindless munching" at home, with sweet-eating in public falling by 16% over the past 12 months.
