Recession-hit consumer turns to chocolate, more evidence

Further evidence to suggest that when the going gets tough, the tough eat chocolate with upmarket London department store Selfridges claiming chocolate sales are up a colossal 80 per cent on last year's figures.

A report from the Belfast Telegraph newspaper writes that in addition to chocolate, consumers are also turning to sweets as a treat, with the store reporting a 30 per cent sales increase in non-chocolate confectionery.

“Chocolate is an affordable luxury, it doesn't cost a huge amount and makes people feel better," said a Selfridges spokeswoman cited in the article.

“We have seen a big increase in people buying chocolate in the store," she added.
