Researchers from the University of Warwick in the UK have come up with a model Formula Three racing car to run on chocolate oils – with a steering wheel made of carrots.

Although the car would not actually be allowed to compete in compositions because of its chocolate-derived fuel, Dr Kerry Kirwan of the International Automotive Research Centre said the performance would be the same as other cars in the category.

The project is intended to apply a green, ‘farmers’ market approach’ to technology, using agricultural products and waste as the basis for materials and fuel in the automotive industry.

The foam for the car seat is made of soybean, and the steering wheel is spun out of carrot fibres.
