A certification label to give consumers the ability to take control of their free sugar intake has been launched with the backing of Tesco.

Created by Rend Platings, a mother who became increasingly concerned with her daughter’s sugar intake, Sugarwise is aimed to give confidence that shoppers are buying products that meet World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.

WHO recommendation

In 2015, the WHO recommended people should get no more than 5% of their daily energy intake from free sugars.

Dr Tom Simmons, co-founder, and an expert on sugar, said: “Free sugars are the big food issue of our time. There is a large potential to positively impact health by changing the free sugars profiles of our foods, especially if these changes can be made in the manufacturing process.”
