Ongoing research work has resulted in a new high density polypropylene (HDPP) wrap for confectionery that is economical in terms of material weight and heat sealing temperature, claims Moneta.

The Slovakian firm said its two new sweet wraps made from HDPP, which were released at the at the recent ProSweets trade fair in Germany, have memory the equivalent of aluminium as well as having excellent anti-static characteristics.

Developed to respond to growing sustainability issues in confectionery packaging through the use of less material, the films target a range of confectionery products.

Peter Lopatnik, marketing director at Moneta, said that, as far as he knew, the company is the only packaging supplier in the world that has the technical capability to produce HDPP film for confectionery.

The Yango HDPP-O is lighter at 15 microns and can be used with chewy and hard sweets, while the Yango HDPP-T is thicker at 17 microns and is applicable to larger size chocolates.

Industry interest in biodegradability components for packaging is accelerating in pace with a desire to find sustainable solutions to growing environmental concerns.

Production speed

Lopatnik said that both films were 18 months in development and result in greater efficiency and speed on the production line.

“They are cost effective in that they can be heat sealed at 50°C due to their inherent polymer structure and also run at a speed of up to 2000 ppm on universal packaging machines,” he said.

Moreover, said Lopatnik, the Yango HDPP-O film enables a shelf life of at least six months for chewy sweets.

EU food contact compliance

He added that the wraps comply with requirements of EEC directives regarding direct contact with food: “They are ecologically clean films and contain no PVC polymers.”

And, said Lopatnik, in terms of keeping stocks, the Yango HDPPs have no specific conditions for storage, and can be stored for five years.

The films show high stiffness, he continued, and can be metallised, transparent or produced with a white pigment.

Market penetration

Moneta supplies both large and small scale confectioners in the US and Europe, Germany and Russia, in particular, with increasing business in recent months in Poland, he added.

The marketing director revealed that the flexible packaging company achieved the BRC Global Standard for Packaging last year, with one of its leading customers, UK confectionery giant Cadbury, requesting that Moneta go through the certification process to adhere to its supplier standard. It is also ISO certified since 2007.
