Chocolate digestive best biscuit for dunking finds poll

05-Mar-2009

A survey in the UK has found that the best biscuit to dunk in a cup of tea is the chocolate digestive.

The chocolate-coated digestive beat rich tea, digestives, hobnob's and chocolate bourbon's to the number one slot, according a survey of 3000 consumers carried out by the UK's internet market website www.onepoll.com .

Completing the top ten dunkers were the chocolate hobnob, chocolate chip cookies, custard creams, shortbread and the ginger nut.

According to reports of the survey in a swathe of UK newspapers this week, the digestive also came top in a university study into the best 'dunking' biscuit.

Physicist Dr Len Fisher, an honorary research fellow at Bristol University, used a hi-tech Instron stress-tester to calculate the breaking-point of each biscuit.

The papers report that chocolate digestives won because their coating protected them from the effects of the hot tea. Apparently, the biscuits can withstand at least eight seconds in a tea or coffee, compared to three to four seconds ginger nuts and hobnobs.
