More than 1,100 products across Mondelēz’s US snack portfolio, including Oreo cookies, Good Thins crackers and belVita breakfast biscuits, are now searchable on the SmartLabel app.

SmartLabel is a program that was initiated by the Grocery Manufacturers Associations (GMA) to allow shoppers to scan QR codes on products for nutritional information.

Mondelēz’s chocolate competitor Hershey was the first company to adopt the program in November 2015. The Reese’s maker first used the initiative on Hershey’s Holiday Kisses and planned to introduced it across its Kisses range in the US.

Mondelēz said it has placed the QR codes on its newest US snack and confectionery products. These include Teddy soft bakes, bear-shaped cakes with a chocolate or vanilla filling, Sour Patch kids candy and Trident gum.

It said it will add the feature to all its products by the end of 2017.

Mondelēz’s spokesperson Richard Buino said, "In the near future, the SmartLabel app will also show which Mondelēz products carry the company's Cocoa Life sustainability program seal, such as a line of Green & Black's chocolates launched in late 2016."

Informed choices

“Our SmartLabel app is available for both iOS and Android,” Buino said. “It’s very intuitive and mirrors the product pages found on Smartlabel’s website for smartphones.

“Once the app is downloaded, consumers can scan a barcode to get information on a specific question they may have about an ingredient or the product.

“We understand consumers’ focus on wellbeing and are committed to empowering them to make better, more informed choices,” he added.
