Compostable films may offer best green option for dried foods
A lack of recycling options makes compostable materials the best option for flexible packaging films in the dry food market, according to Innovia Films.

For the final part in our special edition on dried food packaging, Clare McKeown, European market manager at Innovia Films, discussed how the green credentials of the pack type can be improved.

In the dried food market, keeping moisture out is vital but the materials used to do so make it difficult to find an eco-friendly option once the consumer is has thrown away the pack.

McKeown said there is currently no system for separating flexible laminates so Innovia has instead decided to explore the potential of compostable films.

She added that the company has a new range of eco-friendly films that it is planning to launch at Interpack next month in Dusseldorf.
