A new Fairtrade chocolate maker is attempting to enter the ethical confectionery market with a unique charitable marketing campaign.
The website, chocaid.com, established this month, invites consumers to purchase products carrying a code on the wrapper which can be entered online and allows the buyer to donate a percentage of the purchase price to the charity of their choice.
Last year, the emergence of ethical consumerism prompted buyers to more conscience-driven shopping and caused an upsurge in sales of products such as Fairtrade, organic and single origin chocolate.
Chocaid are targeting this growing market with a range of organic, Fairtrade chocolate produced in Switzerland.
The line includes dark chocolate with a cacao content of 71 per cent, milk chocolate, champagne truffles and organic chocolate slabs as well as luxury gift items.
Fairtrade was estimated to be worth £230 million by the end of last year, experiencing some 265 per cent growth between 2002 and 2006 alone. What is more, market analyst Mintel predicts Fairtrade will see sales crashing through the half a billion pound mark (£547 million) by 2011.
