Ferrero fined $65,000 for safety slip

Chocolate maker Ferrero Canada has been slapped with a $65,000 fine after a worker was injured at the firm’s plant in Brantford.

The company was found to have violated the nation’s Occupational Health and Safety Act by not ensuring that proper safety guards were in place for one of its machines.

The incident, which occurred last year, resulted in the worker losing a portion of one finger, after the hand came into contact with a moving auger in a hopper used to bag cocoa.

Ferrero Canada, which pleaded guilty, also received a 25 percent victim fine surcharge on the total fine, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime, said Canada’s Ministry of Labour.
