Whitman's Candies, the US maker of boxed chocolate assortments, has
joined forces with Weight Watchers to launch a new line of
products.

The chocolates, which have zero trans fats, are being launched across the US.

The chocolate company hopes to tap into a consumer trend for healthy living. The products have been developed to suit consumers on Weight Watchers' flex plan.

The Weight Watchers by Whitman's line will still include real milk, sugar and nuts but will come in tailored combinations and portion sizes to better accommodate those on the firm's diet.

The Weight Watchers' programme is based on the principle that individuals can eat what they wish providing they control how much they eat.

A certain number of points are attributed to particular foods with the aim to reward healthier food choices.

The new product line will include favours such as English toffee squares, mint patties, pecan crowns, crispy caramel and chocolate mouse.

Whitman's is most famous for its Sampler box of chocolates, which the company claims to be the US' biggest selling boxed chocolate variety since its introduction in 1912.

The company's products are sold through 70,000 wholesale accounts in more than 20 countries.

Whitman's, which traces its roots back to 1842, has a history in health conscious product launches.

In 1984 the company introduced Light Chocolates and in 2001 sugar free candies. More recently in 2003 a net carb line was launched.
