Color vision improves processing precision

A new food inspection system uses color vision to automatically
detect spoilage and recognize individual products, its manufacturer

Vision machines are used in the food industry to ensure product and packaging quality and that the production line is running at optimum speed. They provide processors with a second pair of eyes for sorting, identifying and monitoring products. Cognex claims its VisionPro 4.3 automatically detects spoilage, determines fat content of meat products, and sorts fruit and vegetables by type or ripeness. The computer-based system also allows beverage manufacturers to verify label, cap and product color, ensuring the correct product is packaged correctly, the company claims. Kris Nelson, senior vice president of factory automation at Cognex said existing vision tools improve yield and productivity at many stages of production. "Now, manufacturers can achieve similar gains in other applications where color inspection is required,"​ he said. VisionPro can be integrated into existing processing and sorting lines. In addition to rapid application development, VisionPro provides PatMax, the premier object location software and other industry leading vision tools. US-headquartered Cognex Corporation designs and manufactures machine vision sensors and systems, Massachusetts. The company has offices and distributors located throughout North America, Japan, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
