Cocoa and chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut has inaugurated a healthcare centre in Goh, near San Pedro, in the west of Ivory Coast, in a drive to provide basic healthcare to local cocoa growers and their families.

The centre, which will be equipped with a consultation room, a room for in-patients, a pharmacy and a maternity ward, will be able to provide medical assistance to 18,000 people.

“Africa is of utmost importance for us and our business, because the quality of the finished chocolate product is already determined in the country of origin,” said Barry Callebaut CEO Patrick De Maeseneire. “It is therefore important for us to give something back to these countries.”

Over the last two years the Swiss firm has invested €30m in production lines in San Pedro.

Life expectancy in Ivory Coast is less than 50 years.
