New consumer-generated messages of love for the Valentine’s Day launch of the heart shaped Sweethearts including ‘Tweet Me’ and ‘Text Me’ reflect a generation focused on social networking sites, claims the New England Confectionery Company.

Last summer, the manufacturer held an online consumer contest that asked Americans what they wanted to see on the 145-year old sweets, with other contemporary expressions set to feature including ‘You Rock,’ and ‘Soul Mate’.

In a commercial tie-in, the company said it also will be launching an iPhone application that allows users to send virtual Sweethearts boxes with personalized messages that can appear on anyone's Twitter page.

According to the company, in 1866, Daniel Chase, brother of Oliver Chase, who founded New England Confectionery Company in 1847, invented the process which allows sayings to be printed directly on the sweets.

The New England Confectionery Company said it manufactures about 6 billion of the sweets annually.
