Walki eyes European expansion with Meuwissen acquisition
Walki Group said its takeover of Meuwissen Industrie BV will see it boost its position in key sectors and geographical markets.

The Finland-based technical laminates producer made the announcement yesterday after completing the deal to buy the Dutch firm’s flexible packaging and building and construction materials operations.

The businesses, which posted combined 2010 sales reaching €21m, are based in the Netherlands and employ a total workforce of 65.

No financial details of the acquisition were available.

Expansion and integration

Walki president and CEO Leif Frilund hailed the buyout as he revealed the potential advantages for his company.

"The acquisition of Meuwissen is an important step for Walki as it will allow us to further develop our position as a leading producer of technical laminates and protective packaging materials", he said. "Their location in the Netherlands is an excellent fit to Walki's existing plant network and they will increase our local coverage in the important central European markets".

Meuwissen’s operations will be incorporated into the Finnish company’s technical products business division which has production facilities in Finland, Germany, Sweden, the UK and China.

Walki technical products vice president and general manager Wolfgang Thissen said the new acquisition’s technical know-how and flexible way of working dovetailed with its own. It would also expand the company’s reach and improve supply chain efficiencies.

“Additionally, their network of distribution channels will provide enhanced access to markets in Central Europe for the combined business, bringing benefits for the whole supply chain", said Thissen.
