More collaboration between producers, processors and retailers was needed, according to Puvan Selvanthan, United Nations global compact head of sustainable agriculture, if there was to be any progress.
At some point in time, there would be a collaborative approach between all parties as soon as they see an alignment of interests, he added.
“All of the energy that we put into debate [about sustainable palm oil] could be better spent looking for a solution,” he said.
“Everyone doesn’t like to be told from an external source what to do, but that’s what the RSPO has to do.
“The message of doing a good thing is being lost in the heat and the emotion. It’s a tough sell to have one group of people to tell you how to live your life.”
