Sustainability is the only direction everyone in the global supply chain should be working towards, said Robert Hoster, Cargill Refined Oils Europe trading director.
The whole chain needed to be involved in sustainable palm oil right from the start, he said.
However, this was easier said than done. He said it would be hard to convince the likes of China and India to be more sustainable.
“China is not going to be the next country to jump on the sustainability wagon,” he said.
“We need to make sure we make sustainability more affordable, because there are 400M people in China who aren’t able to pay a hefty premium for sustainable palm oil, so we need to ensure that it’s cost effective to grow.
“We need to make sure that it remains affordable and we don’t introduce cost into the supply chain so that it would make it less affordable.”
