‘Unshredded Wrap’ - protective layer of chocolate comes off in one go

Constantia Flexibles has created an aluminium foil wrapper, called Unshredded Wrap, which ‘ends the frustration of chocolate lovers trying to peel off the protective layer in little bits’.

The company was recently recognized by judges in the Alufoil Trophy Awards 2017, organized by the European Aluminium Foil Association, picking up a prize in the Consumer Convenience category.

'Elastic coating'

The judges said the ‘elastic’ coating on the foil means it comes off in one piece.

“Constantia Flexibles created a special ‘elastic lacquer’ which is applied on the foil (outside or inside). This enables easy unwrapping of small chocolate balls, eggs, seasonal products or even chocolate bars/tablets, as it stretches like an elastic band, so the wrapper comes off in one go,” said Guido Schmitz, director, packaging design consumer health, Bayer and lead judge.

He added, simple designs are the best and this product scored the highest marks for its ‘sheer simplicity’ but one should not underestimate the elegance of it either.

The wrapping material also offers improved puncture resistance.

Constantia Flexibles recently completed the sale of its Labels division to Multi-Color Corporation for approximately €1.15bn ($1.3bn).

Flexible packaging expansion

The transaction brings together the Food and Beverage business of Constantia Flexibles’ Labels division with Multi-Color’s Wine & Spirit and Home & Personal Care platforms.

Alexander Baumgartner, CEO, Constantia Flexibles wished former employees a successful future as part of Multi-Color and said the proceeds from the transaction will go towards further acquisitions in the flexible packaging industry.

“This deal provides the company with an opportunity to refocus on its core business and grow more rapidly,” said Bernard Gautier, member of Wendel’s Executive Board and chairman of the Supervisory Board of Constantia Flexibles.

“It also gives the company an indirect leadership position in the label industry as the largest shareholder of Multi-Color, with a 16.6% stake in its equity.”

Wendel is majority shareholder of Constantia Flexibles, with a 60.5% equity holding.
