Nestlé will open its first KitKat pop-up shop in South Africa to offer consumers personalized chocolate.

The temporary store, which is located at the Mall of Africa, Midrand, will only be available to the public for four weeks starting November 24, 2018.

The Swiss-based company noted this has been a ‘successful concept’ for KitKat in the UK, Japan, Australia and Malaysia.

“Bringing it to Africa is a natural evolution for the brand. What better way to get your ‘perfect break’ for yourself or someone you love, than to give them a handcrafted four finger bar,” said Zanele Mthethwa, business executive officer of chocolate at Nestlé South Africa.

Using tablets to design chocolate

According to Nestlé, the new ‘chocolatory’ will allow people to design their chocolate using tablets.

‘First, select your favorite Nestlé KitKat Milk, White or Dark four finger bar. Then you can add up to three toppings from a selection of 14 to your bar,’ it said, adding the toppings include Zesty Lemon pieces, Caramelized Hazelnut Crocant, Mint Chips, Strawberry Pearls, Caramel Fudge, Coconut, Brownies, Mixed Berry Fruit Pieces, Honeycomb, Shortbread, Caramelized Pearls, Tutti Fruity, White Blossom and Milk Blossom.

‘The next step is to select a personalized pack and message,’ continued Nestlé. ‘The pack selection is made up of one of five different designs with stunning photography of iconic South African landmarks and African animals.

‘The final step is to pay. As this is handcrafted, there is a 20-minute wait while you shop before collection… Your creation will be handed to you in a gift bag with a gift card included.’

Additionally, a limited amount of special edition KitKat inspired by South African desserts, including Milk Tart, Trifle and Black Forest, will also be available at the store, according to Mthethwa.

She said: “The special edition collection celebrates our South African heritage.

“As a company that has been operating in South Africa for over 100 years, we are proudly South African… We wanted [our] chocolate lovers to enjoy the experience of the KitKat Chocolatory while taking them through a nostalgic journey of their childhood memories and special holidays.”
