'Embrace Your Punch Day 'returns on July 18 with events planned across the USA as the brand celebrates its 30th anniversary and adds its support to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Sour Punch, a brand of sour candy, manufactured by American Licorice Company, celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year and has announced it is re-introducing the fan-favorite, limited-edition ‘Grape Straws’, which it says is ‘perfect for a fun summer treats roundup’.

Sour Punch introduced the Grape Straws flavor in the ‘90s when ‘grape’ flavored cough syrup was popular. Initially, candy lovers assumed that the grape Sour Punch would taste like the not-so-grape-flavored cough syrup, so they were apprehensive to try the candy, a spokesperson said.

The Sour Punch team decided to pull the flavor from shelves in response, unaware that it had slowly started to build a growing following of fans. Over the years the brand received thousands of requests from consumers to ‘bring back grape!’ on social media, and the Grape Straws have become a fan favorite.

Black Lives Matter

The Sour Punch brand purpose message of ‘Embrace Your Punch’ has also offered support to the Black Lives Matter campaign and said it supports peaceful protest.

American Licorice Company’s CEO, John Kretchmer, said on its website: It is investing $300,000 in non-profit groups that serve black and minority communities; Continuing the internal reviews of our diversity practices to move the conversation of racial equality forward; Establishing a Diversity Council, including external members of the black community, to monitor our corporate diversity policy and guide our investments in black and minority communities; and Continuing to listen and learn about how we can support the long-term needs of black and minority communities.

Sour Punch’s Grape Straws are available from its website and Amazon.
