A Singapore-based company has created new software it claims will
speed up the process of designing plastic bottles.

"This technology can generate thousands of models from one core model, enabling the designer to browse and choose the most desirable outcome," said Genometri Pte Ltd. "This technology will also allow the designs to be customised rapidly according to the customers specifications."

Due to its convenience and lighter weight plastic containers, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), are taking over from glass as the packaging of choice for many products.

In the last few year bottle design has seen an explosive growth in terms of from, shape, colour and material variations in an attempt to grab customers attention, Genometri noted in a press release.

"In a crowded market design is becoming a critical factor," the company stated. "Genetic design generation will make it easy to rapidly generate attractive designs rapidly."

The software can generate each model of container in about 10 seconds, reducing the cost per design.

The software can be implemented on top of existing CAD packages, such as SolidWorks. This allows the designer to edit the models manually at any stage of the design process form which productions models may be made, the company stated.

"Manufacturing constrains such as draft angels can be built into the genetic model to ensure that is it feasible to manufacture generative designs," the company stated. "The volumes of all the design could be set to a particular volume, for example 1.5 liters - something difficult to achieve in the manual design process."

The software displays the design models in photorealistic quality, making it possible to build a catalogue of models, avoiding the cost of prototyping and product photography.

"Photo real rendering will eliminate expensive late stage changes and disappointments rising out of the product looking different than the design," Genometri stated.

A major trend in the beverage packaging sector is the replacement of glass bottles by PET containers, according to AMI research in a report released last year.

Another report last year, from Freedonia, forecast above-average growth in plastic containers made for the food sector based on the improved heat resistance of resins such PET.
