Mars says growing demand for its confectionery products in the US has prompted the firm to invest in a new “state-of-the-art” manufacturing facility in the country.

According to the firm, the new chocolate site in Topeka is the first to be built in the US in thirty-five years.

Mars said it expects to invest around $250m (€172m) into the first phase of project, which should be completed by 2013, when the site will start producing the company’s M&M and Snickers products.

The firm said it expects to hire approximately 200 full-time operations employees to resource the lines installed during the initial phase.

Further stages of development will then expand the capacity of the facility, and more product lines will be added, said Mars.
