MeadWestvaco paperboard approved for chocolate and confectionery packaging

Packaging firm MeadWestvaco (MWV) has gained sensory analysis approval for its Crescendo paperboard meaning it can now be used to package chocolate and confectionery products.

The Crescendo paperboard had been available for other foods and in industries such as cosmetics and pharmaceuticals for a number of years.

Since it has passed the Robinson test, it is now available to the confectionery market.

Robinson test

The Robinson test is the European standard sensory analysis check to see if a material is safe for direct contact with chocolate and confectionery products.

It is based upon a test method called EN 1230-2, which examines the paperboard’s ability to maintain product quality without traces of odour from the packaging.

Approved in all markets

The Robinson approval will also allow MVW’s Crescendo paperboard to be sold in the US, Asia and Africa.

MWV marketing manager Regina Knoll told ConfectioneryNews.com: “We saw a great opportunity to provide premium packaging paperboard to the Confectionery market and the Robinson test is a key requirement for this market.”

“We have seen the interest increasing as our Crescendo paperboard is now Robinson certified.”

The paperboard

MWV sells the Crescendo paperboard in one or two sided coatings (Crescendo C1S and C2S).

Knoll said it was up to the confectioner to decide which was best for its products, but noted that two-sided coating was slightly heavier.

She claimed the paperboard gave an exclusive look that could premiumise a product.

“Crescendo has a high white smooth coated surface that makes it easy to use high quality finishes such as silver foil, spot UV varnish and other fine touches” she added.
