Russian tennis ace Maria Sharapova is planning to legally change her name to Maria Sugarpova for the US Open in a bid to promote her sugar confectionery brand.

According to The Times, the sports star has enquired about a name-change through the Supreme Court of California.

If granted permission from the grand slam committee she will compete as Sugarpova at the US Open and will change her name after the event.

Reports suggest she intends to sport the Sugarpova logo, a pair of red lips, on her clothing for the tournament.

The premium sugar confectionery brand Sugarpova is produced by Spanish-based candy maker Sanchez Cano, owner of the Fini brand.
