Hershey has appointed its CEO John P. Bilbrey as chairman to succeed incumbent James E. Nevels.

Nevels has held the position since February 2009 and will become Hershey’s lead independent director. It was his decision to combine the CEO and chairman positions.

Bilbrey, who has been CEO since May 2011, was elected as chairman by the board.

In Nevels’ new role, he will liaise between the chairman and independent directors, approve board meeting agendas and assist with succession planning.
