Tangerine Confectionery is next year launching what it claims is the UK’s first yogurt-coated popcorn.

The company is extending Butterkist - the UK’s largest popcorn brand - with the new variant, which rolls out to retailers including the Waitrose, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury’s supermarket chains from late January. It will be sold in a 160 g sharing bag with an rsp of £1.49 ($2.22) and a multipack of six 20 g bags with an rsp of £1.69 ($2.51).

Tangerine said the flavour had been developed as a result of consumer research that had shown yogurt-coated popcorn appealed to consumers seeking a “light and healthy treat or snack with maximum taste”.

Stretching the brand

The launch will tap consumer demand for yogurt-coated snacks, said the supplier, and take Butterkist into a market that already includes cereal bars and dried fruits.

The innovation will stretch both the brand and category to drive increased excitement and engagement,” said Butterkist senior brand manager Anjna Mistry. “This innovative, first-to-market flavor is great-tasting and appeals to consumers seeking a healthy snack.”

Yogurt-flavored popcorns have been available in the US, with Popcorn Indiana launching ‘Greek Yogurt Dizzlecorn’, while the Pop Art brand sells a Tandoori Yogurt flavour.
