Red plastic found in a bag of peanut M&Ms in Norway did not come from the production plant in France, according to Mars.

At the end of May a consumer informed the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) that he found a small magnetised plastic object in a 1kg Peanut M&M’s pouch sold in a duty free retail store at Oslo Airport.

Along with similar products it was pulled from store shelves and examined with an X-ray machine. The results found no foreign bodies and the product is back on shelves.

A Mars spokesperson said: “We have carried out a full investigation on pieces of the object and can confirm that it did not originate in our factory in Haguenau in France, where the product was made.

“In accordance with our procedures, we have been in discussion with the relevant food authorities and have shared the findings of our investigation.

“We can also inform you that the French authorities have attended our site to discuss the situation and to verify our findings.”

It was imported into Norway by Travel Retail Norway and sold at duty free in Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger, Bergen and Trondheim.
