French supplier and branded chocolate maker Cémoi has acquired Pennsylvania-based molded chocolate company Chris Candies.

Cémoi has acquired the company from private investors.

Chris Candies was founded in 1940 and today specializes in producing organic, fair trade and low-sugar chocolate for third party companies. It also manufactures own-label chocolate for supermarkets and other retailers.

The company has a factory in Pittsburgh and around 80 employees.

Cémoi said in a release the acquisition would help it grow in the US, where it is already present as an ingredients supplier, private label manufacturer and with its own brands.

Around half of Cémoi’s $860m annual sales come outside of France. The group’s North American arm contributed $12m in revenues in 2016.

The French firm last year established a sales partnership with Peeps maker Just Born to increase distribution of Cémoi-branded products.
