Bartek Ingredients has been acquired by TorQuest Partners, private equity firm.

The company specialises in malic and fumaric acid production for the food and beverage industry.

Shelf life

For example, malic acid imparts fruit flavor profiles to candies, intensifying flavors, improving aftertaste, and broadening flavor profiles and fumaric acid extends the shelf life in candies.

Bartek’s malic acid ingredients are also used in beverages delivering fruit flavor profiles like apples and citrus fruits.

Matthew Chapman, partner, TorQuest, said demand for malic acid is on the rise globally.

According to Radiant Insights market research firm, global fumaric acid market size is expected to reach $764.8m by 2020, due to growing processed food demand and RTD (ready-to-drink) beverage consumption.

It claims energy drink consumption by athletes coupled with innovation in flavors for food & beverages is likely to surge market growth.

Fumaric acid used as an intermediate in unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) is set to grow owing to increasing infrastructure spending in countries such as China, India and Brazil.

Baked goods, fruit juices

Bartek is the market leader in malic acid, with distribution to more than 35 countries around the world. TorQuest is committed to supporting Bartek as it expands its capacity and capabilities to better serve its customers, under the leadership of incoming CEO John Burrows,” he said.

In addition to its malic acid ingredients, Bartek produces fumaric acid products that extend shelf life, improve machinability, and deliver a cost-in-use benefit in baked goods, fruit juices, candies, jellies and jams.

Cost-in-use remains a major opportunity for both human and animal nutrition brands to deliver a quality product with cost efficiency,” said incoming CEO John Burrows.

Whether seeking to improve taste, create operational efficiencies, or make a more effective product, we help our customers apply our specialty products to achieve their objectives.”

Headquartered in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, Bartek employs 115 people across two production facilities in Southern Ontario.
