Italian packaging company SACMI has announced it has bought Puglia-based company Pack Sud - a leading supplier of bakery product vertical packaging technology.

A spokesperson for SCAMI said the deal provides a strategic skill and know-how boost to its Packaging & Chocolate Division's product range.

Pack Sud has developed close ties with Italian companies in the bakery field (such as the traditional tarallifici and makers of other bread-derived products) on account of the design advantages of their versatile, low cost machines.

Made official on 30 June 2020, the takeover saw the SACMI Group acquire a 60% holding in the Bari-based company, also an established manufacturer of food packaging and wrapping machines.

Giovanni Campolungo, CEO of SACMI Packaging & Chocolate, said: "The Pack Sud takeover represents a further step in the implementation of a strategy that has the twin goals of product range completion and market diversification.

“Pack Sud will bring SACMI exceptional, segment-specific expertise. This operation therefore completes us on both a technological level and in terms of target customers."

SACMI acquired a 60% share in Pack Sud (founded in 2003) - which employs 15 people and turns over €2.5m ($2.85m) a year - with a view to expanding its holding to 100% in the coming years.

President of SACMI Imola, Paolo Mongardi, said: "With its takeover of Pack Sud", SACMI continues to pursue a strategy of growth on external lines too by acquiring companies with strategic skill and Italian expertise".
