London-based sustainable chocolate brand Love Cocoa’s mission to drive positive change within the chocolate industry has received an added boost after recognition as a certified B Corporation, achieving an overall B Impact Score of 88.3.

The business comprises two brands – luxury, sustainable chocolate brand, Love Cocoa and plant-based oat milk chocolate H!P Chocolate - both of which are committed to creating chocolate that tastes good and does good. With ethical values at their very heart, both brands are known for championing sustainably sourced cocoa and plastic-free packaging alongside commitments to fighting deforestation and climate change.

Its audit by B Corporation revealed Love Cocoa met the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

The business, which is committed to balancing profit and purpose, was especially commended for its Impact Business Model, and its determination to put people and the planet first, every step of the way. In addition, Love Cocoa was also recognised for its work to address supply chain poverty alleviation, and its employee career development programme, staff engagement and satisfaction.

James Cadbury, the company’s founder said: “I started Love Cocoa on a mission to change the way we eat chocolate for the better, and over the years I’ve been lucky enough to find a wonderful team of like-minded individuals. This achievement marks a milestone in our journey and it’s a true testament to our commitment to do business better.”

Love Cocoa’s beans are sourced from Luker Chocolate, a family-owned Colombian business, which harvests its own beans and works alongside other cocoa farmers to create long-term, sustainable relationships to provide a fully traceable and transparent ‘farm to bar’ supply chain.

To be a B Corp, a firm must legally consider the impact their decisions have on workers, customers, suppliers, community and the environment by using business in a positive way and outside of shareholder profit.

Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK says: “Being able to welcome Love Cocoa to the B Corp community is hugely exciting. As a dynamic challenger brand, their commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to other start-ups and help spread the idea that we can redefine success to be as much about people and planet as it is about profit.”

Love Cocoa has also planted in excess of 1.6 million trees in the last two years via its tree-planting initiative in partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects. And it is now also a member of 1% For The Planet, donating 1% of sales to global environmental causes.
