Representatives from many of the major chocolate companies and cocoa suppliers are due to travel to Amsterdam at the end of October to take part in the Sustainable Commodities and Landscapes Forum.

Over the two days (October 31 to 1 November) the event will focus on how business can respond to incoming EU legislation on deforestation and assess what supply chain transformation really means on the ground for farmers, forests, biodiversity, and nature.

The nature of this Forum is to promote frank and honest debate and to this end, the organisers have added a ‘5th Room’ to the agenda - an additional space for discussion on some of the unspoken truths in sustainability. “In these off-the-record sessions, we’ll ask attendees to share mistakes and freely speak their minds as we have pragmatic and honest conversations about the future.

“We’ll also focus on cross-commodity learnings and practical solutions through a variety of PowerPoint-free and off-the-record panels, workshops, and Q&A sessions.”

The Forum also promises to be ‘farmer focused’ incorporating more farmer perspectives throughout the two days to ensure the conversation remains grounded in reality.

Speakers include Cathy Pieters, Mondelēz International, Vice President Global Sustainable Ingredients, who will share best practice on how to ensure a holistic approach to sustainable and responsible procurement working with the Tropical Forest Alliance.

Nestlé and Barry Callebaut will also debate how current - and evolving - carbon accounting frameworks will shape climate strategy.
