- Mondelez invests CHF 65m ($83m) to strengthen Toblerone production and innovation
- New Bern production line marks milestone in Toblerone’s modernisation plan
- Investment enhances capacity and supports long term brand growth
- Center of Excellence strengthens Swiss heritage and global competitiveness
- Project signals Mondelēz’s commitment to future focused chocolate innovation
Last year, Mondelēz International announced plans to invest CHF 65m ($83m) in one of its biggest brands – Toblerone.
The purpose of the funding? To found the Toblerone Center of Excellence in Bern, Switzerland – the very place the brand was founded by Theodor Tobler in 1908.
Now, a year into the works, the confectionery giant has reached an important milestone – the opening of a brand-new production line.
Toblerone’s Swiss plant produces around 90% of all Toblerone products, so modernising and expanding production is essential to achieve growth.
And today, the new line was officially inaugurated by Swiss President and Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin.
“If there is one product that represents Switzerland worldwide, it is chocolate,” he said. “Toblerone has a very special place among Swiss chocolates. It is more than just chocolate. It is a piece of Swiss history. And a symbol of Swissness par excellence.”
A pivotal moment for Toblerone
For Toblerone, the new production line marks more than just added capacity, it signals a renewed commitment to the brand’s future.
With demand for premium chocolate growing worldwide, the Center of Excellence will allow Toblerone to innovate faster, diversify its portfolio, and reinforce its identity at a time when heritage brands are under increasing pressure to stay relevant.
For Mondelēz, the investment is a strategic play. Strengthening the manufacturing footprint in Bern not only safeguards Toblerone’s Swiss‑made credentials – a key differentiator for consumers – but also sets the stage for long‑term growth within the company’s broader chocolate portfolio.
