Summerween trend overview
- Summerween brings Halloween celebrations forward, extending confectionery sales opportunities
- Social media popularity has transformed Summerween into a retail phenomenon
- Sixty-seven percent of parents have already purchased Halloween confectionery this year
- Hershey reports growing demand for seasonal products before October
- Critics warn holiday creep may cause fatigue without boosting sales
The Hershey Company has joined many of the biggest names in confectionery in celebrating Summerween.
And what is Summerween, you ask?
Well dear reader, it’s the start of Halloween in the Summer.
Popularised through social media and inspired in part by Disney’s Gravity Falls, which featured a midsummer Halloween, the term has evolved from a niche trend into a cultural phenomenon.
Consumers are embracing pumpkins, spooky décor and Halloween treats months before the Autumn leaves begin to fall, creating new opportunities for brands and retailers.
“Halloween anticipation is starting long before October,” says Hershey. As a result, brands are getting involved in the growing appetite for spooky season months ahead of schedule, rolling out themed products, promotions and marketing campaigns while the sun is still shining.
This is great news for manufacturers as it extends one of the industry’s biggest and most important sales periods.
And Hershey is keen to make the most of it. The confectionery giant says shoppers are already planning for Halloween celebrations and seasonal gatherings, prompting them to get Halloween-themed treats onto supermarket shelves earlier than ever.
After all, if Christmas can creep into August, why shouldn’t Halloween arrive in July?
Summerween in numbers:
- 55% of parents say they’re in “Halloween mode” before October begins
- 67% of parents have already purchased Halloween confectionery this year
- 53% of Gen Z consumers are already familiar with the term ‘Summerween’
- 41% of parents expect to be more involved in Halloween celebrations this year.

“As Halloween continues to evolve, it’s become one of the longest and most anticipated seasons of the year,” says Stacy Taffet, chief marketing and growth officer for Hershey. “Consumers are creating rituals that blend tradition, self-expression, and community. We’re meeting consumers where they are with the snacks and experiences that help make these moments memorable all Halloween season.”
But, while Summerween is gaining momentum, consumers still see it as very much separate to Halloween.
Summerween and Halloween
According to the maker of big-name brands, including Reese’s Piece’s, Twizzlers and Hershey’s Kisses, Summerween and Halloween fulfill different needs for consumers.
Summerween helps to build excitement and anticipation, while Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, remains the main event.
But, not everyone’s convinced extending Halloween is a good idea. Critics of so-called ‘holiday creep’ argue that bringing seasonal events forward risks consumer fatigue and could simply shift purchasing patterns forward rather than generating entirely new sales. Yet the momentum behind Summerween shows little sign of slowing.
Whether Summerween is a fleeting social media fad or Halloween’s next big evolution remains to be seen. For now, confectionery brands are wasting little time putting pumpkins, ghosts and chocolate treats front and centre.
