  • The launch reflects growing demand for swicy confectionery products

  • Designer partnerships help confectionery brands create buzz beyond shelves

Ferrara Candy Company has gone all out with its latest launch.

The confectionery giant has collaborated with artist and shoe designer, Jeff Cole, to launch limited-edition trainers called ‘Lil Kicks’, alongside its new sour gummy.

Why?

Because the new Trolli Spicy Crawlers gummies are said to have a “lil kick of heat”.

“We couldn’t just launch a new flavour and call it a day,” says Chad Womack, marketing director of Trolli. “Trolli Spicy Crawlers deserved a celebration as bold as they are. Spicy Crawlers deliver the perfect mix of sweet, sour and heat, so we wanted to turn that lil kick into something fans could wear, too.”

But the sweet maker isn’t selling the shoes. It’s giving them away on a first-come, first-served basis via its website, meaning that Trolli customers can get a pair of designer kicks completely free. And every detail was inspired by the new Trolli Spicy Crawlers gummy, meaning they’re absolutely original and incredibly errrrm bold...

The rise of experiential marketing

The launch is the latest sweet-and-spicy (swicy) confectionery innovation to hit supermarket shelves, as consumer demand for more adventurous taste experiences continues to grow.

And for Ferrara, it reflects a continued focus on pushing the gummy category beyond traditional flavour profiles.

The collaboration is also another example of how confectionery brands are leaning into experiential marketing to boost sales. Rather than relying solely on traditional advertising, manufacturers are increasingly creating experiences that extend beyond the product itself, from fashion partnerships and influencer campaigns to immersive events and giveaways designed to build cultural relevance and drive online conversation.

It follows Ferrero’s FIFA World Cup campaign, Nestlé’s KitKat and Formula 1 collaboration, Ferrero’s Wonka-Netflix tie-up, Mars’ M&M’s NYX make-up launch, and Snickers taking a swipe at Reese’s Pieces.

Oh, and there was also that time the world’s biggest confectionery manufacturer got into bed with Love Island to launch limited-edition M&M’s.

But beneath the novelty, these collaborations reflect a broader shift in how confectionery brands market their products.

As competition for consumers’ attention intensifies, manufacturers are increasingly investing in experiences that extend beyond the confectionery aisle.
