Nestlé regenerative agriculture push – overview
- Nestlé supports industry initiative to scale regenerative agriculture globally
- Programme aims to create common metrics and practical implementation frameworks
- Move responds to pressure to reduce Scope 3 emissions and risks
- Nestlé targets sourcing 50% of key ingredients from regenerative farms
- Questions remain on farmer incentives measurement and real world adoption impacts
Nestlé has pledged its support for the Regenerating Together Programme (RTP), an initiative aimed at scaling regenerative agriculture practices across global supply chains.
Regenerating Together Programme (RTP)
Supported by more than 40 leading food and agriculture businesses, the Programme was developed with input from farmers, agronomists, non-governmental organisations, academia and industry, and is backed by environmental organisations including The Nature Conservancy and Earthworm Foundation.
RTP aims to provide a more practical and harmonised framework for regenerative agriculture, including the development of common metrics, guidance for implementation, and tools to help companies track progress and outcomes across supply chains.
Its creation follows cross-sector collaboration to develop “a more practical approach to regenerative agriculture”.
The initiative comes amid growing pressure on food companies to decarbonise Scope 3 emissions and improve supply chain resilience, with regenerative agriculture increasingly positioned as a key lever to achieve both environmental and economic goals.
Its approach aligns with Nestlé’s existing work with farmers and suppliers to help build more resilient supply chains, improve farmer livelihoods and contribute to positive outcomes for nature.
“Regenerative agriculture shows great potential to strengthen supply chain resilience against climate change while helping improve farmers’ livelihoods,” says Pascal Chapot, VP Head of Agriculture at Nestlé. “To accelerate adoption, we need practical and credible frameworks that can be consistently applied across the value chain.”
Nestlé is one of several major food and beverage companies scaling regenerative agriculture efforts, alongside competitors including PepsiCo, Danone and Mars, which are also investing in farmer transition programmes and sustainable sourcing commitments.
Nestlé aims to source 50% of its key ingredients from farmers adopting regenerative agriculture practices by 2030. Key commodities expected to fall under this target include dairy, cocoa and coffee, which are central to the company’s global supply chains.
