Oreo snacking expansion – overview
- Mondelēz expands Oreo with mini bags and new sharing formats
- New products target demand for convenient portable snack options
- Launches include Cookie Dough flavour and Enrobed White variants
- Strategy aims to grow Oreo beyond traditional biscuit occasions
- Expansion reflects wider confectionery focus on format innovation
Mondelēz International is expanding its most famous brand, Oreo, and it’s shifting even further into snacking in the process.
The famous biscuit can now be found in mini snack bags, as the brand looks to tap into growing demand for portion-controlled, on-the-go treats and broaden its appeal beyond the traditional biscuit aisle.
The addition to the portfolio, says Mondelēz, is designed to tap into the trend for “growing consumption occasions”. In other words, the multinational wants Oreo to become a bigger part of consumers’ everyday snacking habits.
The move forms part of the company’s strategy to capture a greater share of the snacking market.
The new format lands on shelves alongside Oreo Cookie Dough Flavour, Oreo Enrobed White and a new Oreo Sharing Tray.
“We expect these launches to drive excitement for the brand and the wider category,” says Sophia Burger, brand manager at Mondelēz International.
Beyond the biscuit aisle
Oreo’s latest expansion comes as manufacturers across the industry look for new ways to drive growth in mature categories. Part of that strategy involves rethinking how products are packaged and consumed.
Rather than relying solely on new flavours, manufacturers are experimenting with pack sizes, formats and textures to appeal to consumers seeking convenience, portability and value.
If the latest launches prove successful, they’ll likely pave the way for more format innovation as manufacturers look to unlock fresh growth from their biggest brands.
