Darling Ingredients’ health brand, Rousselot, has been at the forefront of much of the innovation involving clean-label gelatin and collagen-based solutions and has discovered a way to fill them with the correct amounts of nutraceuticals.

Naturally versatile and full of functional potential, gelatin is a sustainable ingredient in everything from clean-label gummy confectionery or dairy products to eco-friendly pharmaceutical delivery forms.

Rousselot recently introduced its latest SiMoGel gelatin solution, which enables the production of soft gummies and even centre-filled gummies without traditional starch depositing.

Gummy caps

Also known as ‘gummy caps’, these liquid-centre gummies enable high-API content, accurately dosed vitamins or minerals, for example, in an attractive format for people of all ages.

Utilizing the SiMoGel starch-free production process, these gummies or gummy caps can be hygienically manufactured at an industry-leading setting time of just 15 minutes, boosting ROI without compromising product safety or efficacy, a Rousselot scientist from its Global Application Laboratory in Ghent told ConfectioneryNews.

From nutritional to OTC solutions, consumer demand for functional gummies is growing. Beyond being a popular choice for children, gummy products have been shown to appeal to 65% of adults, according to Rousselot, highlighting their potential as a delivery form for nutraceutical and active pharmaceutical ingredients across different ages and needs.

Liquid filling

Adding a liquid filling can also further boost the palate experience and expand the dosing possibilities of these products. However, producing centre-filled functional gummies with various nutrients or APIs efficiently and economically can be complex.

“Bridging the gap between the appealing gummy delivery format and the RDI dosages required for nutraceuticals or APIs has long been a complex challenge for producers, says Marit van der Heijden, Global Marketing Manager, Rousselot.

“With the new SiMoGel concept for creating innovative centre-filled gummy applications, we can successfully help our customers tackle this obstacle. This supports our partners in creating premium centre-filled gummies with a larger range of nutraceuticals or active pharmaceutical ingredients in higher concentrations, allowing them to differentiate their offering and meet the sophisticated expectations of today’s discerning consumers.”
