The company allegedly knew about the problem since February, but fixed it without making a recall or notifying regulators. Company crisis management was brought into the limelight in February following criticism against Bernard Matthew's failure to inform regulators that its turkeys were dying in large numbers from bird flu. When investigations by regulators and the bulldogs of the news media uncovered the facts, the company's practices were put in an even more glaring light than warranted by the original crisis, and sales dropped by 40 per cent.
