The new PearliCoat Pearlescent Pigment System from US company Colorcon can give confectionery the allure of a pearl-like finish and the sparkle of vibrant colour, according to the company.

The thin-coat product is designed to help the food industry reach both upscale confection consumers who like glamorous products as well as the teen market looking for candies and snacks with an edgy appeal, Colorcon said this week.

PearliCoat is available in five brilliant colours and is formulated as both a liquid or dry concentrate. The pigment system accommodates both flavouring and sweetening, is FDA approved and can be used by food manufacturers in many different ways: as a complete coating system, to add a marbleising or speckled effect, and on confections, chocolate, jelly beans, salted snacks and a variety of other products.

"These pigmented systems also offer manufacturing flexibility to food processors as they can be used on already finished products as well as products in production," said David Hibbs, director of business development at Colorcon's food/confectionery division.

The just-in-time benefits of putting a finished product back in the pan for an added PearliCoat allows confectionery companies to quickly change product appearance as the market demands, without the need for reformulation or the cost of carrying a variety of products in inventory, Hibbs added.

The new Colorcon system uses high-value pigments that do not require large volume usage to achieve the desired pearlescent effect. Available in both aqueous and solvent-based formulations, the thin pearlescent coating does not fracture or rub off during packaging and shipping, the company claimed.
