Africa is a next wave opportunity for confectionery sales as disposable income in some major markets rises. South Africa is already among MarketLine’s five global confectionery markets to watch in the next five years, while big firms such as Mars and Mondelēz have been ramping up investment in North Africa in recent years. Online confectionery sales in the UK were up around 30% in 2014 compared to the prior year. Global market leader Mondelēz International hopes to reach $1bn in online sales by 2020. The future of 3D printing in confectionery

Hershey tips 3D printing to take off like the microwave oven did in the Eighties - with ultra-customized designs a possibility in retail stores. Katjes subsidiary the Magic Candy Factory is already making waves with its 3D sugar confectionery printer, allowing personalized designs. Now others, such as Barry Callebaut, are entering the fray. This special will explore what the future holds for 3D printing in the confectionery industry.

The world’s largest confectionery trade fair ISM takes place in Cologne, Germany, from January 29 to February 1, 2017.
