Aldomak talks about Middle East tastes after winning first overseas deal
The news comes after the Scottish food company acquired The Handmade Meringue Company, based in Thornliebank, East Renfrewshire, this month.
New Product Development
It already supplies products for Aldi’s Specially Selected range and with the acquisition it will improve its margins through ownership of the brand, which has a listing in Waitrose, Scotland.
Speaking about the Middle East, Dario Riccomini, managing director, Aldomak, told ConfectioneryNews the company is versatile enough to embrace experimental flavors and is already doing this for the UK market for Christmas 2018.
“The demand from the Middle East currently centres around traditional ranges and the expat community enjoys the nostalgia of that, but there is definitely an interest in the local population trying out western tastes,” he said.
Riccomini declined to comment on which retail chain it has partnered with in Abu Dhabi and said any future activity in the area is dependent on how well initial sales go.
“It’s a small order which will be shipped before Christmas but we are hopeful this will lead to stronger export links to this market in the future,” he added.
Prospective new customers
Riccomini who has been in charge of the family firm since 2001 said following the acquisition the company is in talks with a number of prospective new customers on supplying its existing range and expanding The Handmade Meringue Company brand.
Aldomak received an A-grade certificate from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) in April this year, which will allow the firm to tender for contracts across the UK and overseas.
The BRC Standard is a globally recognized mark of quality and safety. It is the first Food Safety Standard to be benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), the consortium set up in 2000 to set an international ‘Gold Standard’.
Aldomak said at the time, as part of a collaborative export program it was looking to expand in the US, Canada and China among others.
