Review of the year
Industry chews over biodegradable gum
Major manufacturers this year admitted they are looking closely at biodegradeable chewing gums that are friendlier to the environment and reduce gum litter.
Leading gum maker Wrigley has identified degradable gum as it number one research priority, while Trident’s parent company Mondelez is hoping to collaborate with a third party.
Revolymer, the UK firm behind the Rev7 gum base and brand, brought gum products to market during the year, which it claims can degrade over two to three months in drains and in less than two years on pavements.
Manufacturers could see such gums as means to avoid gum taxes, which have been proposed in a number of countries this year, including Wales, Northern Ireland and Mexico.
